Refugee Resettlement Project

Here is the latest updates and information!

We’re partnering up with other local congregations to form a larger interfaith Community Sponsorship Team and there are lots of different ways you can contribute. Learn about our project.

It’s a quickly moving situation, but here’s what we know so far:

The family is an Afghan family of 8 who has come to our group through HIAS, the resettlement agency. They are a couple in their 30s with 5 children (ages. 11, 8, 6, 3, 9mo) and a 20 year old nephew. They speak Dari. Dad is an electrical engineer with basic English, Mom has no English.

Currently, members of our group are searching for an affordable apartment that can work for a family of this size. Once an apartment is selected there will be a need for volunteers to help with furniture and other necessities before they move in.  This document outlines the different types of assistance community sponsorship teams provide, and explains the different committees each of us can join.

The best first step if you’d like to help is to enter your information in this Volunteer Sign Up Form and indicate on there ways you might be able to contribute. There’s no expectation once you fill it out…it’s mainly a way for us to get everyone’s information in one place.

Another way to get plugged in is to join a weekly call. Every Thursday at 8:00am the group will meet on Zoom to get an update and discuss what is needed at the moment. Feel free to join tomorrow or any upcoming Thursday.

Here is the ZOOM LINK for the weekly meetings.

I’ve been engaging with members of this interfaith team over the past month and they’re a really lovely, committed group of people. I think working together with them – and helping this family that has been through so much – can be a meaningful experience for everyone individually, and for us as a congregation.

Thanks so much for expressing interest in getting involved. Look forward to working with you to help our new neighbors feel welcome and supported as they settle into their new home and community 🙂
